Just Sayin'

Not related to any specific example, but my experience in the last few months has taught me one thing is for sure.

You cannot teach those who do not want to learn.

When you're in the public school business, this is beyond frustrating.

Yup. People spend time arguing about class size, standardized test scores, curriculum standardization, etc. But if we really want to improve the results of public education we need to figure out what to do with the kids who don't want to learn.

Remove the babysitting factor and the rest of the kids might actually have a chance to excel.

These kids aren't being "left behind," they're actively running the opposite direction knocking down as many people as they can in the process.

Yeah, even when you have a principal who says, "We're going to lead them to water and if they don't want to drink we're going to hold their heads under until they have to swallow at least some." But I swear I held some under all year and they refused to open for even a trickle.
